PM begins intensive consultations on Smart City initiative

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today chaired a high-level meeting with Government officials on the Smart City initiative. This is part of a series of consultations on Smart Cities.

The Prime Minister has asked the Ministry of Urban Development to convene a workshop of all central and state Urban Development Authorities at the earliest. He said one of the aims of the smart city initiative should be to improve the quality of urban governance, thereby lending greater strength to the overall governance processes of the country. He said the workshop should also focus on reforms in laws related to urban development.

The Prime Minister called for identifying parameters that could be laid down for smart cities. He asked officials to identify the basics of infrastructure, quality of life, and citizen-centric services that would be essential to cities of the 21st century. He said cities should be identified as hubs of economic activity. He said focus on "waste to wealth" – i.e. - solid-waste management, and waste-water treatment would be an important part of the development of smart cities.

The Prime Minister asked Government officials to visualize "urban-dependent" population, in addition to "urban" population, while planning for Smart Cities.

Officials from the Prime Minister`s Office, Ministry of Urban Development, and Ministry of Information Technology, were present on the occasion.

PM Modi commends the Rajaji Utsav, graced by the President of India, honouring Shri Chakravarti Rajagopalachari Ji

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, unveiled a bust of Chakravarti Rajagopalachari installed at the Grand Open Staircase near Ashok Mandap at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi described the initiative as a commendable effort reflecting India’s resolve to honour those who shaped the nation’s destiny and to shed remnants of a colonial mindset. Shri Modi said that Rajaji was a towering scholar, freedom fighter, thinker and administrator whose life embodied integrity, intellect and unwavering commitment to the nation.

The President of India also graced the ‘Rajaji Utsav’ at Rashtrapati Bhavan. As part of Rajaji Utsav, an exhibition on the life and work of Rajaji is being organised from February 24 to March 1, 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi said that Rajaji Utsav is a wonderful initiative bringing out different aspects of Rajaji’s rich contributions to the nation, and urged people to visit the exhibition and draw inspiration from his life and ideals.

Responding to the X posts of President of India about aforementioned initiatives, Shri Modi wrote on X;
