১২তম পূর্ব এশিয়া শীর্ষ সম্মেলনে ভাষণ দেওয়ার সময় প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদী বললেন যে, বৈশ্বিক বিভাজনের সময় আসিয়ান শুরু হয়েছিল, কিন্তু আজ আমরা তার সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী উদযাপন করছি। এটা একটি আশার আলো, শান্তি ও সমৃদ্ধির প্রতীক।
তিনি আরো বলেন, "আমরা আগামী বছরের মধ্যে পূর্ব এশিয়া সম্মেলন আরো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়ে উঠবে আশা করি। আমি এই অঞ্চলের রাজনৈতিক, সুরক্ষা ও আর্থিক সমস্যা মোকাবিলা করার জন্য আপনার সাথে কাজ করার অঙ্গীকার পুনর্ব্যক্ত করছি"।
