Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today described the Congress sultanate at the Centre imprisoning the spirited BJP youth set to unfurl tri-colour at Lal Chowk in Srinagar as an insult to the national pride and patriotism.

Dedicating the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Bridge on the River Tapi on the eve of the Republic Day at Surat, he said the National Song and National Flag are the two greatest symbols of nationalism and it is the religion of every Indian to respect and protect their nation’s pride.

“Is not Kashmir an integral part of India, and is it a crime to unfurl the National Flag in Srinagar?” he asked.

The Chief Minister said that he has never seen a more useless government as the present one at the Centre. He said that such a huge democracy succumbing to the evil designs of the terrorists is simply unacceptable.

In an appeal to the Prime Minister, Mr. Modi said the Centre should respect the patriotism of the youth and desist from insulting them by pushing them into the jails.

He described Dr Mukherjee, after whom the new river bridge has been named, as the first martyr of free India. “Dr Mukherjee too was sent to jail for fighting against ‘two Prime Ministers, two Constitutions and two Flags in one nation’ as he embraced martyrdom in the jail,” he recalled.

Mr. Modi, who is in Surat as part of Gujarat’s state-level Republic Day being held in the state’s second biggest city this year, complimented the people and the administration for completing projects worth Rs.450-crore for the city and another Rs.650-crore for the district, including the Rs.44-crore river bridge connecting Dabholi with Jahangirpura.

He also announced Surat becoming the first district in the country for cent percent completion of making tribal farmers as the owner of land. He distributed appointment letters to youth who got training and job through the government’s ‘Ummeed’ programme.

Surat Mayor Rajubhai Desai gave details of development projects. Prominent among others present on the occasion included District Guardian Minister Mangubhai Patel, Panchayat Minister Narottam Patel, MPs Darshanaben, Pravinbhai Nayak and C.R. Patil, legislators, corporators, panchayat leaders and officials.
