Gujarat to celebrate state-level Independence Day in Kheda district this year

Governor Kamlaji to honour freedom fighters on eve of I-Day

1,919 projects worth Rs.88-cr to be inaugurated, 2,228 projects worth Rs.669-cr to be announced or begin on the occasion

Gandhinagar, Thursday: Even as Gujarat celebrates state-level Independence Day involving people's participation in Kheda district this year, Chief Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the National Flag at Nadiad on August 15, 2011 at 9.am.

According to state government spokesperson-ministers Jay Narayan Vyas and Saurabh Patel, the celebration in 11 towns and 627 villages of the district had begun since August 4. While 1,919 projects worth Rs.88-cr are being dedicated to the people, another 2,228 projects worth Rs.669-crore will be announced or begin on the occasion.

Governor Dr Shreemati Kamlaji will be the chief guest at Nadiad's Garden function in presence of the Chief Minister on August 14 at 5 p.m., honour freedom fighters and deliver the address on the eve of the I-Day.

The Chief Minister will begin his itinerary from the morning of August 14, pay tributes to Sardar Patel at his birthplace, participate in DDIT University's function ‘Gyanodaya Dwar-Gujarat', interact with young researchers, inaugurate a Nano Technology Centre, visit orphanages, lay foundation stone of Rs.111.20-crore Nadiad city underground gutter project and Rs.244-cr Nadiad-Kapadwanj-Modasa Road project. The celebrations will culminate with a cultural programme by local artistes, titled ‘Khamirvanti Kheda' and presenting a CD of special subscription drive for Gujarat Government's Gujarati fortnightly ‘Gujarat'.

The district holds a pride of place in the nation's freedom struggle. It was from here that India's first non-violent ‘satyagraha' led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel began on the call of Mahatma Gandhi. The district produced a galaxy of illustrious sons like Bhathiji Maharaj of Fagwel, who sacrificed his life for the protection of cow, Lok Sant Pujya Mota, Santaram Maharaj, Ravishankar Maharaj, Indulal Yagnik, Babalbhai Mehta and Goverdhan Tripathi.

These I-Day functions are being held under the guidance of Kheda Guardian Minister Ramanlal Vora, chief whip in State Assembly Pankaj Desai and Parliamentary Secretary Sundarsinh Chauhan.
