PM Modi’s Green Energy Vision is a Game-Changer for India. Here's what Stats Speak
December 13, 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spearheaded a transformative push in India's renewable energy sector, positioning the nation as a global leader in sustainable energy initiatives. Under his leadership, India has not only made significant strides in increasing its renewable energy capacity but has also taken on pivotal roles in international renewable energy organizations. Notably, India co-founded the International Solar Alliance (ISA) with France, which aims to promote solar energy usage among its 99 member countries and mobilize substantial investments for solar projects. India's ambitious goal to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 reflects this commitment. The nation has successfully installed over 200 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, making it the first G20 country to fulfill its climate commitments ahead of schedule. PM Kusum has been instrumental in ensuring reduction of dependency on fossil fuels from agriculture sector. Over 4 lakh farmers have benefited from the scheme . The PM Surya Ghar scheme exemplifies this approach by providing financial support for rooftop solar installations, allowing households to become power producers while also generating employment opportunities. This initiative not only promotes renewable energy but also helps families save on electricity costs. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, is transforming India’s energy landscape with a bold vision to supply solar power to one crore households by March 2027

Moreover, the government's focus on energy efficiency is evident in the widespread adoption of LED lighting across homes and infrastructure, significantly reducing power consumption and contributing to lower carbon emissions. These combined efforts illustrate India's comprehensive strategy to transition towards a sustainable energy future while ensuring economic growth and environmental protection.

170% +Increase in Installation of Renewable Energy

2014 – 76 GW
2024 – 211 GW

Installed Capacity

• Total Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity: Reached 213.70 GW, a 14.2% increase from 187.05 GW in 2023.
• Total Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity (including pipeline projects): Surged to 472.90 GW, a 28.5% increase from 368.15 GW in the previous year.

New Renewable Energy Capacity Additions

• In FY 24-25, 14.94 GW of new capacity was added by November 2024, nearly doubling the 7.54 GW added during the same period in FY 23-24.
• November 2024 alone saw an addition of 2.3 GW, a fourfold increase compared to the 566.06 MW added in November 2023.

Solar Power Growth

• Installed capacity increased from 72.31 GW in 2023 to 94.17 GW in 2024, marking a growth of 30.2%.
• Total solar capacity (including pipeline projects) rose by 52.7%, reaching 261.15 GW compared to 171.10 GW in 2023.

Wind Power Contributions

• Installed wind capacity grew from 44.56 GW in 2023 to 47.96 GW in 2024, reflecting a growth of 7.6%.
• Total wind capacity (including pipeline projects) increased by 17.4%, from 63.41 GW in 2023 to 74.44 GW in 2024.

As on 31.10.2024, a total of 211.40 GW non-fossil power capacity has been installed in the country, which includes 92.12 GW Solar Power, 47.72 GW Wind Power, 11.33 GW Bio-Power, 52.05 GW Hydro Power and 8.18 GW Nuclear Power .

Government Progressive Reforms for Renewable Energy

100% FDI in Renewable Energy Space – The government has permitted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Renewable energy sector up to 100 percent under the automatic route, which would help in foreign companies to set up their manufacturing plants, and help in creating employment opportunities as well.

Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for National Programme on High Efficiency Solar PV Modules- for achieving manufacturing capacity of Giga Watt (GW) scale in High Efficiency Solar PV modules

Green Energy Corridor - Inter-State Transmission System - Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved construction of an Inter-State Transmission System for power evacuation and grid integration of the 13 GW RE projects in Ladakh and despatch of power from the U.T. of Ladakh to other parts of the country.

GOBARdhan - a mission to transform biodegradable and organic waste, including cattle dung, agricultural residues, and biomass, into high-value resources like biogas, CBG and organic manure which would help in creating clean burning fuel naturally.

Making Big Impact on Global Stage

International Solar Alliance - India was re-elected as the President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for a two-year term

One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSWOG) - is an Indian initiative to provide solar energy to 140 countries.

‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) Movement - the vision of LiFE is to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it. And those who live such a lifestyle are called “Pro-Planet People”

Bio Fuel Alliance - To strengthen global cooperation for rapid adoption and deployment of biofuels, the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) was launched on 9th September 2023, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi with the support of 19 countries and 12 international organizations
