PM visits Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan and Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Vancouver

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Stephen Harper, today visited the Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan in Vancouver.

During his remarks at the Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan, the Prime Minister described the reconstruction of the Gurudwara at Lakhpat in Gujarat during his tenure as Chief Minister. He said the Gurudwara at Lakhpat, where Guru Nanak had stayed for 15 days, had been damaged in the 2001 earthquake, and had been reconstructed successfully.

"Karambhoomi par fal ke liye shram sabko karna padta hai, Rabb sirf lakeerein deta hai, rang humko bharna padta hai," the Prime Minister quoted, saying that we should fill life with colours of humanity, and serve mankind. Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Harper also visited the Komagata Maru Museum.

In his remarks at the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, the Prime Minister thanked the Canadian Prime Minister and the people of Canada for the warm welcome and hospitality they had accorded him. He said the Supreme Court of India had described Hinduism as a way of life. He exhorted the gathering to live life scientifically, in balance with nature, and with compassion. He said the United Nations had recently adopted June 21st as the International Day of Yoga with 177 countries co-sponsoring India's resolution. He said Yoga had great potential to help the world overcome the stress of modern life, and urged people to spread this message.

Prime Minister holds a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of New Zealand

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, The Rt. Hon. Christopher Luxon today. The two leaders jointly announced the successful conclusion of the historic, ambitious and mutually beneficial India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

With negotiations having been Initiated during PM Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025, the two leaders agreed that the conclusion of the FTA in a record time of 9 months reflects the shared ambition and political will to further deepen ties between the two countries. The FTA would significantly deepen bilateral economic engagement, enhance market access, promote investment flows, strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries, and also open up new opportunities for innovators, entrepreneurs, farmers, MSMEs, students and youth of both countries across various sectors.

With the strong and credible foundation provided by the FTA, both leaders expressed confidence in doubling bilateral trade over the next five years as well as an investment of USD 20 billion in India from New Zealand over the next 15 years. The leaders also welcomed the progress achieved in other areas of bilateral cooperation such as sports, education, and people-to-people ties, and reaffirmed their commitment towards further strengthening of the India-New Zealand partnership.
