SelfieWithDaughter top trend on Facebook and Twitter in India, trends among top 5 across the world
PM uses ‘Mann Ki Baat’ to strike a chord with people, pitches for better gender ratio
#SelfieWithDaughter yet another example of innovative campaigns adopted by PM Modi during #MannKiBaat to connect with people

During his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Sunday 28th June the Prime Minister gave a clarion call to parents to share selfies with their daughters. He said that this was a concept originally mooted by a Sarpanch in Haryana, which caught his eye. Shri Modi stated that this idea will give a big impetus to the Government’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative that seeks to educate more and more girls and improve the gender ratio in India.

No sooner did the PM request the selfies than the selfies poured in. People from all walks of life shared their selfies with their daughters, even adding what their daughters mean to them. Many said their daughters mean the world for them, while many shared memories of their daughters- like their first day at school, a family holiday with the family etc. Many wrote that their daughters are their bundles of joy. Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Smt. Nirmala Sithraman, MP Shri Pratap Simha, Gujarat Minister Shri Shankarbhai Chaudhary, former IPS officer Shri Kiran Bedi, film personality Shri Shekhar Kapur, USA’s Assistant Secretary of State Ms. Nisha Biswal, journalists Shri Kanchan Gupta, Ms. Chitra Subramaniam, Shri Umesh Upadhyay and Smt. Richa Anirudh are among those who have shared their #SelfieWithDaughter moments.

Within hours #SelfieWithDaughter became a rage across social media. It was the top trend in India both on Facebook and Twitter and was trending worldwide among the top five positions. Over a lakh Tweets have been shared on this topic. People from Africa and Europe have shared selfies, contributing to the fervour.

Empowerment of women has been an issue on which PM attaches vital importance. As Chief Minister his visits to parents during peak summer to get their daughters educated is well known. The proceeds from all the gifts he received as CM were donated towards girl child education. At the Centre, proactive steps have been taken for women empowerment be it in educating the girl child, maternal health, improving gender ratio and women’s safety.

The Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat programmes have time and again ended with such innovative clarion calls that have struck a chord with the people. Last month, he urged people to share glimpses of #IncredibleIndia and lakhs of people responded to his request. His call for #DrugsFreeIndia too created waves across India.

Here are some #SelfieWithDaughter moments:

Welcoming the CEOs, Prime Minister said that these roundtables have emerged as a key platform for industry-government alignment.
