Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Ji, describing him as a lifelong devotee of Indian art and culture.

Pandit Ji was one of the foremost exponents of the Banaras Gharana, a school of Hindustani classical music deeply rooted in Kashi’s traditions. His renditions carried the essence of the city’s musical heritage. He mentored countless students in Kashi, ensuring that the city’s musical traditions were preserved and passed on, making his home in Varanasi was a hub of learning, devotion, and artistic excellence.

The Prime Minister recalled his personal association with Pandit Ji, noting the privilege of having received his blessings and support, especially during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when Pandit Ji served as his proposer from the Varanasi constituency, a gesture that symbolized his deep-rooted commitment to the city and its evolving legacy.

Shri Modi has often spoken of Pandit Ji’s affection and blessings, describing them as a personal privilege. Their relationship reflects a shared reverence for India’s classical traditions, spiritual depth, and the transformative power of culture.

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Ji was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour in 2020 by the current Government for his distinguished contribution to Indian classical music.

Shri Modi emphasized that Pandit Ji’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians, artists, and cultural enthusiasts.

In a post on X, Shri Modi wrote:
