In the sphere where you have studied you get a chance to serve the poorest of the poor. I urge you to serve the poor and give them quick justice: Shri Modi

On the evening of Saturday 19th January 2013 Shri Narendra Modi addressed the 4th convocation ceremony of the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar. The Chief Minister congratulated the students who received their degrees and wished them the very best for their future. He asked the students to go out with the determination to serve society. The Honorable Chief Justice of India Shri Altamas Kabir was present at the occasion.

Shri Modi stated that GNLU is now completing a decade and that it has created a new ray of hope among students and legal circles. “After 10 years, I can say we are going ahead in the right direction. I am sure students who have passed out of here are being appreciated for their work and that is when they remember the university.”

The Chief Minister pointed that the University is a mini-India and that each student is not only going with a law degree but also becoming a brand ambassador of Gujarat. “Gujarat is proud that a student who studied here is a Brand Ambassador of the state and will fondly remember the time they spent here,” he stated.

Talking to the students about the student life the Chief Minister opined, “There is a different joy of student life. When you go out, life brings various questions and that is when our Shiksha and Diksha are tested.” He further said, “Till now you had someone to guide you. After this you will not find anyone who will say that. Now what you learnt will guide you. This is the start of life. I am sure your experience here will shape your experience in future and inspire you.” The Chief Minister avowed that without a Guru decisions can be tough but if our Shiksha and Diksha is good then we can overcome these challenges.

Shri Modi urged the students to serve the poor as they leave the University. He said, “In the sphere you where you have studied you get a chance to serve the poorest of the poor. To give justice to someone is not a small thing. I urge you to serve the poor and give them quick justice.”

On a different note, Shri Modi stated that the students must remember each and every person who made their College life for the last few years possible. “Do not think you had the money that’s why you were sent here. Do not only remember your professors, books. Remember the trees under which you sat in thought, remember the place where you had tea at night, remember the Dhobi, the person who ironed your clothes. Life is not made by the money of our fathers but the support of the people,” Shri Modi told the students.

The Chief Minister shared that the concept of convocations is not new to our culture and that mention of convocations has been made in the Taittiriya Upanishad and that in our culture we accord greater importance to Diksha than Shiksha. He pointed out to the students that they must be blessed that the Chief Justice of India is present during the convocation.

Apart from Honorable Chief Justice Shri Altamas Kabir and Shri Modi, Justice of the Supreme Court of India Shri Anil Dave, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Justice Shri Mohit Shah, Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Shri Prakash Tatia, Ministers Shri Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, Shri Pradipsinh Jadeja and Director of GNLU Shri Bimal Patel were present on the occasion.

Prime Minister condoles the passing of former Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Vijay Rupani
June 13, 2025

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today condoled the passing of former Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Vijay Rupani, who tragically lost his life in the recent Ahmedabad air disaster. Shri Modi highlighted Shri Rupani’s distinguished career, recalling his contributions across various roles, including his tenure in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation, as Rajya Sabha MP, Gujarat BJP President, and as a Cabinet Minister in the state government.

In a thread post on X, Shri Modi wrote:

“Met the family of Shri Vijaybhai Rupani Ji.

It is unimaginable that Vijaybhai is not in our midst. I’ve known him for decades. We worked together, shoulder to shoulder, including during some of the most challenging times. Vijaybhai was humble and hardworking, firmly committed to the Party's ideology. Rising up the ranks, he held various responsibilities in the Organisation and went on to serve diligently as Gujarat’s Chief Minister.”

“In every role assigned, he distinguished himself, be it in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation, as Rajya Sabha MP, as Gujarat BJP President and as Cabinet Minister in the state government.”

“Vijaybhai and I also worked extensively when he was Gujarat CM. He ushered in many measures that enhanced Gujarat’s growth trajectory, particularly in boosting ‘Ease of Living.’ Will always cherish the interactions we had. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
