PM Modi attended the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. The relationship between both the countries has since witnessed an improvement, seen in Mr. Muizzu’s New Delhi visit in October last year, and Mr. Modi became the first Head of State to visit the Maldives since President Muizzu assumed office.

I extend heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister His Excellency Shri @narendramodi for his state visit to the Maldives.

We held fruitful discussions, witnessed the exchange of 4 MoUs & 3 agreements in vital areas, and announced the launch of FTA negotiations.
Together, we celebrated…

“I look forward to my meetings with President Muizzu and other political leadership, to advance our joint vision of a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, and to strengthen our cooperation for peace, prosperity and stability in the Indian Ocean Region,” PM Modi said.

Landed in Malé. Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come.@MMuizzu pic.twitter.com/GGzSTDENsE

The two sides signed 13 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to expand ferry services across the Maldives, and India maintained its defence, maritime, and capacity-building cooperation.Even as the two sides had worked to rebuild their relationship last year, India continued its development assistance and budgetary support to the Maldives, which has been one of the main beneficiaries of New Delhi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on the continuity of recent high-level engagements, saying, "Last year, the President visited India on a State Visit. Now, I have received the opportunity to be the first State Guest of his tenure."Underscoring the civilisational and cultural bonds.

"Our shared heritage is as old as the monsoon and as sweet as Addu Bondi. Our languages reflect the depth of our culture. Several words in Dhivehi have come from India... Our tastes are also similar... Absolutely perfect despite being different."President Mohamed Muizzu congratulated Prime Minister Modi for completing 4,078 consecutive days in office, making him the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms -- surpassing the record previously held by former PM Indira Gandhi. The two leaders jointly inaugurated two defence-related projects – a coastal surveillance radar system and a composite training centre for the Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF).
