PM Narendra Modi has always emphasised the role of space sector in growth of Indian economy. Keeping true to this vision, numerous reforms have been introduced in the space sector. Various start-ups are being encouraged in the sector. Former ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan, too shared an instance how PM Modi ushered in an era of commercial space age in India.
In a video, Radhakrishnan said, “It was 29th May 2014, PM Modi gave me 15 minutes of his time and that was the third day of him becoming the PM of this nation.” He mentioned that space sector reforms brought in the year 2020 were a result of PM Modi’s focus on contribution of space sector in the country’s economic growth. “The reforms brought a system where the private players could become co-passengers in the space activity. We are seeing results of that today. At least 55 start-ups are in various phases of space activity and some of them are majors today,” remarked the former ISRO Chief.
Radhakrishnan also recollected another incident during the launch of PSLV when he travelled along with PM Modi for few hours. It was during that time the idea of space applications workshop and extending it to all the government departments came up. He said, “We got into the details on how the workshop should be organised. PM Modi got all the Secretaries of the Government of India to come and tell where they can use space. The space technology was being used by about 15 departments in Government of India. He wanted it to be used by everyone, all the 60 departments.”
