Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda won first medal at the Paralympic Games, bagged a silver in the Men's High Jump F42 event in London.

 

Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda has done the entire nation proud by winning India’s first medal at the Paralympic Games in London. As the news of this mementoes success came in, Shri Narendra Modi congratulated Girisha for the well-deserved victory.

Shri Modi Tweeted, Many congratulations to Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda to have given India its first medal at the Paralympic Games.

The Summer and Winter Paralympic games are held immediately after the respective games at the same venue that hosts the Olympics.

An avid follower of sports himself, Shri Modi has worked extremely hard to promote sporting activities and create a culture of sportsmanship among the people of the Gujarat. Shri Modi dreams of making sports a true mass movement that involves participation from people of all walks of life, transcending any barriers whatsoever.

This has led to a determined focus to enable more and more specially abled athletes to be at the fore of the state’s initiatives to promote sport. In the Khel Mahakumbh of 2011, as many as 60,000 specially abled athletes participated in the sports extravaganza, invigorating the spirit of the games itself.

This momentous feat was noted by the Special Olympics Family, which wrote 2 very kind letters of appreciation to the Gujarat Government.

In October last year, the Gujarat Government released books on cricket, chess and braille script to enable more and more talented athletes to play sports of their choice.

At the recording breaking Swami Vivekananda Women Chess meet held just recently in Gandhinagar, many specially abled chess players joined the meet.
