"Our constant effort is that Madhya Pradesh reaches new heights of development, makes the lives of every family in Madhya Pradesh easier, and brings prosperity to every doorstep. The track record of Modi's guarantee is in front of you." – Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed that a stable, decisive government with the right intentions delivers development no matter the challenges. The vision of 'Viksit Bharat', which ensures the holistic development of the state of Madhya Pradesh by a decisive government with righteous intentions, reflects this ethos. Leading from the front, since 2013, PM Narendra Modi has made 33 trips to Madhya Pradesh. During the recent assembly election in 2023, the prime minister participated in events at big cities like Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain and Jabalpur and relatively smaller places like Reeva, Ratlam, Mandsaur and Khandwa.

Niti Aayog, in 2023, acknowledged that the fastest reduction in the Multi-Dimensional Poverty value was seen in Madhya Pradesh. The percentage of the total population in the state who are multidimensionally poor has reduced to 20.63% in 2021 from 36.57 % in 2016.

Over 2.27 crore EWS students have enrolled in private schools at the national level in the last five years. Of these, enrolments were highest in MP at over 53 lakh since FY 19. The state has increased the number of educational institutions by 61% and the enrolment of tribal students by 279% in recent times. If it weren't for Ayushman cards, the poor and middle class would have to spend over Rs 1 lakh crore on healthcare services in the state.

Inspired by Antyodaya's vision, the Prime Minister's initiatives have ensured that the tribal community benefits from development, as a large portion of it was left out for decades after independence. The work for development was prioritized around the areas dominated by the SCs, OBCs, and STs, bringing these weak and disadvantaged social groups into the development fold. Twenty years ago, MP experienced a severe power outage. The state now produces excess power and has five times as many medical colleges as it did in the past.

The focus on women's empowerment improved women's quality of life in rural areas. ODF Plus villages in Madhya Pradesh moved from 6% in 2022 to 62% in 2023. In terms of grassroots impact, the self-help group members (which includes more than 50 lakh women today) have not only risen to serve the nation but also to take control and ownership of their choices/lives

PM Modi is the most popular leader, working incessantly for the people's interest and safeguarding the national interest, as opposed to the dynastic, caste-based, and regressive politics of the previous governments in the state. Rs 55.9 crore for 559 villages was transferred under Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), which aims to provide homes to all homeless families, saw the completion of 5.6 lakh houses in 2021-22 and 6.20 lakh in 2022-23. Till June 2023, 96 FPOs are linked with credit guarantee schemes in the State of Madhya Pradesh. Under the model village program in 2022-23, 57,301 lakh soil health cards have been distributed to farmers.

Under the Smart City Mission, startup incubation centres have been established in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Ujjain to develop entrepreneurship among youth in the state. The number of startups has increased from 289 in 2018 to more than 409 in 2022. Madhya Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone by being ranked #1 in the nation for water management and conservation. Madhya Pradesh leads the nation consistently in numerous categories, including cleanliness, pride, and glory. The state has achieved the top spot in the Swachh Survekshan for 2022, and 11 of its largest cities have received national recognition.

Every urban body in the state today has garbage collection vans used to collect dry and wet waste from every ward in various state districts. The state now has a scaled-up irrigation capacity. Instead of canal irrigation, the government has ensured the setting up of pressurized pipelines in the state to utilize every drop of water, allowing irrigation of 1.75 times more area with available water.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has integrated culture, creativity, commerce, and collaboration to boost state tourism. During India's G20 presidency, the Ministry of Culture hosted the 1st G-20 Culture Working Group Meeting from 22nd to 25th February 2023 in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal hosted the grandest folk and tribal cultural event, "Utkarsh," in August 2023. Trimbakeshwar in Nashik, Omkareshwar in Khandwa, Shri Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Amarkantak in Anuppur, these famous tourist and spiritual destinations have benefited under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme allocation for infrastructure development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has demonstrated how 'Double Engine Ki Sarkar' can effectively ensure holistic socio-economic development in states.

6 Years of Jal Jeevan Mission: Transforming Lives, One Tap at a Time
August 14, 2025
Jal Jeevan Mission has become a major development parameter to provide water to every household.” - PM Narendra Modi

For generations, the sight of women carrying pots of water on their heads was an everyday scene in rural India. It was more than a chore, it was a necessity that was an integral part of their everyday life. The water was brought back, often just one or two pots which had to be stretched for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and washing. It was a routine that left little time for rest, education, or income-generating work, and the burden fell most heavily on women.

Before 2014 water scarcity, one of India’s most pressing problems, was met with little urgency or vision. Access to safe drinking water was fragmented, villages relied on distant sources, and nationwide household tap connections were seen as unrealistic.

This reality began to shift in 2019, when the Government of India launched the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). A centrally sponsored initiative which aims at providing a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household. At that time, only 3.2 crore rural households, a modest 16.7% of the total, had tap water. The rest still depended on community sources, often far from home.

As of July 2025, the progress under the Har Ghar Jal program has been exceptional, with 12.5 crore additional rural households connected, bringing the total to over 15.7 crore. The program has achieved 100% tap water coverage in 200 districts and over 2.6 lakh villages, with 8 states and 3 union territories now fully covered. For millions, this means not just access to water at home, but saved time, improved health, and restored dignity. Nearly 80% of tap water coverage has been achieved in 112 aspirational districts, a significant rise from less than 8%. Additionally, 59 lakh households in LWE districts have gained tap water connections, ensuring development reaches every corner. Acknowledging both the significant progress and the road ahead, the Union Budget 2025–26 announced the program’s extension until 2028 with an increased budget.

The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched nationally in 2019, traces its origins to Gujarat, where Narendra Modi, as Chief Minister, tackled water scarcity in the arid state through the Sujalam Sufalam initiative. This effort formed a blueprint for a mission that would one day aim to provide tap water to every rural household in India.

Though drinking water is a State subject, the Government of India has taken on the role of a committed partner, providing technical and financial support while empowering States to plan and implement local solutions. To keep the Mission on track, a strong monitoring system links Aadhaar for targeting, geo-tags assets, conducts third-party inspections, and uses IoT devices to track village water flow.

The Jal Jeevan Mission’s objectives are as much about people as they are about pipes. By prioritizing underserved and water-stressed areas, ensuring that schools, Anganwadi centres, and health facilities have running water, and encouraging local communities to take ownership through contributions or shramdaan, the Mission aims to make safe water everyone’s responsibility..

The impact reaches far beyond convenience. The World Health Organization estimates that achieving JJM’s targets could save over 5.5 crore hours each day, time that can now be spent on education, work, or family. 9 crore women no longer need to fetch water from outside. WHO also projects that safe water for all could prevent nearly 4 lakh deaths from diarrhoeal disease and save Rs. 8.2 lakh crores in health costs. Additionally, according to IIM Bangalore and the International Labour Organization, JJM has generated nearly 3 crore person-years of employment during its build-out, with nearly 25 lakh women are trained to use Field testing Kits.

From the quiet relief of a mother filling a glass of clean water in her kitchen, to the confidence of a school where children can drink without worry, the Jal Jeevan Mission is changing what it means to live in rural India.
