Narendra Modi’s commitment to Party ideology over poll victory

“For any political party, the highest form of validation is winning elections. However, for Narendra Modi, it is always about placing Party’s ideology over poll victory,” said Apoorva Maniyar Ji, a Gujarat RSS Karyakarta, recalling an instance from the 1990s.

Maniyar Ji recounted the days when Narendra Modi was the Sangathan Mantri of the BJP and a meeting was to be held in Rajkot for the upcoming elections. Who’s who of Gujarat politics, like Keshubhai Patel, Chimanbhai Shukla and Praveen Kaka, were in attendance. Narendra Modi sat with them from the morning till wee hours of the night mulling over ticket distribution for the upcoming elections in Saurashtra.

“One of the things Narendrabhai had said was that apart from considering who will win, we must also consider the candidates who would stick to our ideology after winning the seat. That should be a criterion as well,” said Maniyar Ji.

There is another instance where a BJP leader from Chandigarh, Dharampal Gupta Ji, recalled a unique experiment carried out by Narendra Modi. He said, “People of Panchkula and Mohali leave for office around 9:30-10 AM. He made teams of 5 to 10 people and at every round-about in Chandigarh, he made them stand with flags and banners. So that when people move for their offices, the first thing in the morning they would look at the BJP flags and it would be imprinted in their minds. That’s the best time to campaign. Modi Ji did this.”

Another Party colleague, Rupchand Odarmal Sevkani Ji also shared an interesting insight on how Narendra Modi honed the skill of sensing people’s mood. He recalled how during a meeting Narendra Modi chose to stand with the Karyakartas instead of joining other dignitaries on the stage. When he was asked why he was standing amongst them, he had replied, “Gujarat is here. I want to know what is happening in Gujarat. It will help in planning strategies for the future.”

Kunvar Singhal Ji, a Party leader from Haryana also shared an incident when Narendra Modi gave one of the many iconic mantras, which proved revolutionary in winning elections. Singhal Ji said, “Modi Ji had summoned a meeting in which prominent Karyakartas were invited. He gave us the fundamental principle for election. We all were listening keenly. He said, Booth Jeeta, Election Jeeta.”
