Maharashtra, a melting pot of many cultures and the backbone of India's economy has advanced significantly in development, welfare, and cultural preservation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Maharashtra has become an exemplary symbol of progress and wealth due to the efforts of the Modi government, which has implemented social welfare programmes, infrastructural development, and cultural preservation in the state. From constructing state-of-the-art infrastructure like MTHL Atal Setu, the longest bridge in India, to receiving the clothing mill industry of Maharashtra by launching PM MITRA textile park in Amravati, the Modi government has demonstrated its commitment to fir a holistic development of Maharashtra.
A nation's economic growth depends upon an enabling infrastructure. The Modi-led government has launched several initiatives and infrastructure projects to make Maharashtra India's most popular and economically significant state over the last decade. In Jan 2024, PM Modi dedicated and placed the foundation stones for several development projects totalling more than Rs. 30,500 crores in Maharashtra. Maharashtra's infrastructure projects, such as the MTHL Atal Setu, the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Motorway, and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (Bullet Train project), have received significant funding from the Modi. The construction of the 6-lane, 21.8-kilometre Atal Setu bridge required an investment of more than Rs. 17,840 crore. Under the Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), roads totalling 33,499 km long and 905 bridges have been identified and approved for development for Maharashtra.
Maharashtra has seen new heights of infrastructure development. For FY 2023-24, the highest ever budget outlay of Rs. 13,539 crore has been provided for Railways in Maharashtra, which is 1056% more than the Average Annual Budget Allocation of 2009-14 (Rs. 1,171 crore per year). One hundred twenty-six stations in Maharashtra are being modernized under the 'Amrit Bharat Station Scheme scheme'. Shirdi and Sindhudurg airports are operationalized, and a new greenfield airport is coming up at Navi Mumbai. In addition, initiatives like the Smart Cities Mission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) have been implemented to enhance urban infrastructure and services in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik to boost the urban infrastructure. In 2024, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of 8 AMRUT projects worth around Rs. 2,000 crores in Solapur.
One of the main goals of the PM Modi-led government's agenda is ensuring the well-being of its people. Maharashtra has launched several social welfare projects to improve the lives of the marginalized sections of society. The lives of the poor and people belonging to low-income groups in the state have been transformed by programmes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Ayushman Bharat, and the Jan Dhan Yojana, which have ensured everyone's access to affordable housing, healthcare, and financial inclusion. Over 3.4 crore bank accounts have been created in Maharashtra under PM Jan Dhan Yojana. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap water connections have been provided to more than 74 lakh rural households since its inception in 2019. 68.90 lakh household toilets have been constructed in Maharashtra under SBM(G). As of February 2024, 2.19 crore LED bulbs have been distributed in Maharashtra under the Ujala scheme.
The government is also working to promote growth in the industrial and agriculture sectors. Initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for crop insurance benefit farmers in Maharashtra. Policies like "Make in India" and "Startup India" have encouraged industrial growth and entrepreneurship in Maharashtra, particularly in manufacturing and information technology. As of February 2024, more than 12,27 lakh farmers from Maharashtra have registered on eNAM. Maharashtra has been allocated Rs 8460 Crore for the Agri Infra Fund (AIF).
The central government has given significant impetus to the industry. PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park is approved in Amravati. Six Software Technology Parks have been approved in Maharashtra: Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Nasik, Mumbai, and Pune. More than 40 lakh MSMEs from Maharashtra have registered under the Udyam portal.
The government has focused on enhancing healthcare infrastructure and education facilities in Maharashtra through schemes like Ayushman Bharat and the setting up of new educational institutions. In 2023, Mumbai witnessed the official recognition of the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) as an IIM (Indian Institute of Management). This is an essential step towards making Mumbai a formidable hub of academics.
With 2.62 crore Ayushman cards under Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (PM-JAY), Ayushman Bharat has changed the healthcare landscape of Maharashtra. About 650 Jan Aushadhi Kendra have been opened in Maharashtra.
The rich cultural legacy of Maharashtra is a source of pride for its people and a reminder of its glorious past. Under PM Modi's leadership, the government has implemented several measures to promote and protect Maharashtra's cultural past. From giving tribute to the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj to developing many heritage sites in the state, the government has made conscious efforts to make sure that Maharashtra's cultural identity is intact for future generations and garners global attention. Paying tribute to Shivaji Maharaj's legacy, PM Narendra Modi unveiled his statue at Rajkot Fort, Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, on Navy Day in 2023. It marks the 350th anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's coronation, honouring him as the founder of Indian naval prowess, which stood the test of time. In addition, under Swadesh Darshan scheme 2.0, Sindhudurg is notified to be developed with all tourist-friendly amenities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government have taken significant steps to foster the holistic development of Maharashtra through infrastructure enhancement, urban renewal, agricultural reforms, industrial growth, improved connectivity, healthcare, education, and social welfare schemes.
