On Tuesday 30th April 2013 Shri Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of BJP leader and former Gujarat Cabinet Minister Shri Fakirbhai Vaghela. Speaking after inaugurating the 2nd Ahmedabad National Book Fair, the Chief Minister said, “Right now during the inauguration of the book fair I got the sad news (of the passing away of Shri Vaghela). This news is deeply shocking. A colleague and former Minister Shri Fakirbhai Vaghela passed away. This is a very sad thing for me.”

Shri Modi described Shri Vaghela as a person who worked tirelessly for the development of the poor and the marginalized sections of society. “This is a news the mind is never ready for,” he added. Shri Modi said that he spoke to Shri Vaghela only a few days ago and one never knew such sad news would come today. “May God give his family strength and may his soul rest in peace. There is a big void that has been created,” the Chief Minister said.

Shri Fakirbhai Vaghela served as Minister on various occasions in his long association in public life. Most recently he was Cabinet Minister for Sports, Youth Affairs till 2012.

PM to inaugurate 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth on 15th January

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) on 15th January 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, Parliament House Complex, New Delhi. Prime Minister will also address the gathering on the occasion.

The Conference will be chaired by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Shri Om Birla and will be attended by 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers of 42 Commonwealth countries and 4 semi-autonomous parliaments from different parts of the world.

The Conference will deliberate on a wide range of contemporary parliamentary issues, including the role of Speakers and Presiding Officers in maintaining strong democratic institutions, the use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary functioning, the impact of social media on Members of Parliament, innovative strategies to enhance public understanding of Parliament and citizen participation beyond voting, among others.
