“Time for research to develop new technology for energy sector”

Gandhinagar, Tuesday: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today exuded confidence that the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) would emerge as a front-ranking university not just in the petroleum sector but also in research, management and human resource development for the entire energy sector.

Speaking at the second convocation of the university, Mr. Modi said that development has assumed new benchmarks and practices. In the past, harnessing natural resources was not considered exploitation. But now competition for consumption in this age of consumerism has lent new definition to the criteria of development. On the other hand, it has created a crisis for energy security. It has created a new challenge for the new generation to tackle.

He wished the PDPU technocrats and engineers do not become just robots but human beings, too. He said the universities should help the new generation create an environment conducive for the new world order. The universities build confidence in students and prepare them to face the global challenges. When the alumni do well for the society, they earn laurels for the alma mater. Each university has its own identity. It lends responsibility to its students.

The Chief Minister presented graduate and postgraduate degrees to 413 students of School of Petroleum Technology, School of Petroleum Management and School of Nuclear Energy presented medals to 13 meritorious students.

Congratulating the pass-outs, Mr. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of the PDPU Governing Council, called for framing new strategic policy for the energy sector which has assumed a significant role in the new world order for clean, convenient and competitive energy security and efficiency. There is a need for research to develop new technology with the application of all resources.

Mr. Ambani had a word of praise for Mr. Narendra Modi who as the Chief Minister of Gujarat earned name for India, having established Gujarat model of development for all. He said India has the capacity to make impossible things possible. He said that both Reliance Refinery and Gujarat’s revolution in water management once appeared to be impossible task.

With rapid changes in the university education system particularly in engineering, he expressed happiness that PDPU has in a short period earned a name for itself, due to the collective contribution of all. He called for canalizing the youth water in building a new India.

Those present during the function included Education Minister Ramanlal Vora, Ministers of State for Education Vasuben Trivedi and Jaysinhji Chauhan, Chief Secretary A.K. Joti, Mr. K.V. Kamath, Mr. Sudhir Mehta, Mr. Vikram Mehta, Principal Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, Tapan Ray and D.J. Pandian, members of PDPU Governing Council, prominent industrialists and relatives of the students.
