Urja Shakti – Making Energy the Power of the State….

Transparency and efficiency is what people of Gujarat envisaged which now is actually delivered with speed, transparency and true spirit of partnership. Urja Shakti or call it ‘Power of Energy’ – the flow of energy is synergy in Gujarat as Shri Narendra Modi has illuminated every single home in the state.
From 2000 to 2011, Power is uninterrupted in Gujarat. By 2012, it is expected that capacity of Electricity will be over 21000 mega watts. The state is poised to emerge as ‘Energy Hub’ of the entire nation. Gujarat is on its way to roll out one-third or probably more of what the country is slotted to achieve for all of India in the next three years itself.
Four major components that have reached milestones in Gujarat are:
- Wind Energy
- Solar Energy
- Power Generation
- Bio Energy
The Government of Gujarat adopted four pronged strategy to deal with the problem of total rural electrification: Sujalam Sufalam (Water harvesting scheme), Drip Irrigation Scheme, Mass awareness drive for Energy Conservation, and Jyotigram Yojna (Rural lighting scheme)
Power is a tinderbox issue in the country but Gujarat is the only state that has surplus power (600 MW) and has been sending 220 MW of power to Tamilnadu and will send 200 MW power to Karnataka. The story of rural electrification of Gujarat provides a remarkable learning opportunity to other nations and Indian states. Load shedding and power failures are bygone days in Gujarat and unlike any other state, Gujarat now provides uninterrupted power supply with no power cuts.
This is attributed to Shri Narendra Modi’s brainchild ‘Jyotigram Project’ which have multiple impacts. The government has successfully lit the homes with the implementation of Jyotigram Project of 3 phase, 24×7 uninterrupted power supply to all 18,742 villages of Gujarat as well as over 9680 suburbs attached to these villages. This single project has brought revolutionary change in the lifestyles and economic pattern of rural Gujarat. Migration of rural to urban has significantly reduced and a new ‘rurban’ (rural+urban) is shaping up. The time bound implementation of the project in 30 days makes Gujarat the first state in India to achieve 100% electrification in households, commercial establishments and educational institutes across cities and villages. Jyotigram has been the catalyst for socio-economic and educational revolution.

Urja Shakti reiterates the importance of making energy the power with 21 rivers of the states, creating of 2.25 lakh new water bodies by constructing check-dams and farm ponds and reaping benefits of water and electricity from the near complete Sardar Sarovar Project. CM is determined to make the State the power hub of the World generating energy with major part of the production from renewable energy sources including solar power, bio-gas, wind power and natural gas based power.
The Government salutes the tricolor of India by making a provision of ` Rs.1900 crore to make Gujarat energy hub of India, thus ushering in saffron revolution in the field of energy. This would complement white revolution in the field of milk production and green revolution in the field of agriculture in the State. Some budget inclusions in Energy & Petrochemicals sector:
- A landmark achievement in the history of power generation by achieving generation capacity of 18000 MW through a record increase of 36% i.e. 4742 MW over the current installed power generation capacity of Gujarat.
- Planning for creating new 105 sub-stations to improve quality of power distribution.
- A provision of Rs.248 crore to provide electric supply at proper voltage for agricultural use to the farmers through the scheme of Kisan Hit Urja Shakti Yojna (KHUSHY).
- New transmission line with the length of 4822 circuit kilometres will be installed at a cost of ` 1382.91 crores.
Power is key to industry and with a good record of consistent power supply for commercial use, the state has planned several initiatives to build adequate capacity in generation, transmission and distribution of power supply. These include
- rationalizing the power tariff structure
- encouraging power generation from non-conventional sources
- focusing on energy conservation and
- improving the quality of services to consumers.

The state Government has reiterated its commitment towards development of the renewable energy sector and Climate Change, by allotting 1000 MW of Solar Power capacity to 34 national and international project developers.
