On the occasion of 74th Independence-day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at length about the need of peace and harmony for the development of South Asia; improving relations of India with the extended neighbourhood and South East Asia.
He said that one-fourth of the world population is in South Asia. By cooperating, we can create innumerable possibilities for development and prosperity of such a large population. All leaders of countries of this region have an important responsibility for the development and progress of the people. More the peace and harmony in this region more it will benefit for the welfare of humanity. It is also important for the welfare of the world. For that, PM Modi appealed to all people, political leaders, governments and also to the intellectuals of these countries.
Further, PM said that not only are those our neighbours with whom our geographical boundaries meet but also those with whom our hearts meet. In the past few years, India has strengthened relations with extended neighbourhood. Progress in our political, economic and human relations with West Asian countries have accelerated many folds; trust has increased many folds. Our economic relations with these countries especially partnership in the Energy sector is very important. A large number of Indian brothers and sisters are working in many of these countries. During Corona crisis, these countries helped Indians; respected appeals from the Indian government. PM Modi thanked all these countries.
Similarly, in the East, we have ASEAN countries who are our maritime neighbours. They are also of special importance to us. India has almost a thousand years of religious and cultural relation with these countries. Buddhist traditions connect us with them. Today, India is enhancing cooperation with these countries not only in Defence but also in the maritime sector.
