PM’s telephonic conversation with Italian PM Matteo Renzi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation today with Mr. Matteo Renzi, Prime Minister of Italy, at the request of the Italian side. 

Prime Minister Renzi congratulated Prime Minister Modi on his victory in the elections. Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Renzi for his felicitations and wished him success in leading Italy on the path of economic recovery and prosperity. He also reiterated India's commitment to further strengthen its bilateral relations with Italy. In this context, he emphasized the need for strengthening economic cooperation through enhanced trade and investment. 

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Renzi on Italy's assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He expressed the hope that under Italy’s Presidency, India's relations with the EU will expand rapidly and there will be progress on conclusion of India-EU Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement. 

Prime Minister Renzi requested for early resolution of the Italian Marine issue. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that a fair and early resolution was in mutual interest. He conveyed that the matter is subjudice before the Supreme Court of India in writ petitions filed by the marines and encouraged the Italian side to allow the judicial process to take its own course. In this context, he emphasized that Indian judiciary is free, fair and independent and we are convinced that it will take all aspects into consideration in adjudicating the case. 

The two Prime Ministers agreed to maintain close dialogue at all levels.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation today with His Excellency Mr. Matemela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa.

The two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation, which is anchored in historic and strong people-to-people ties. Prime Minister thanked the South African President for the relocation of 12 Cheetahs to India earlier this year.

They also exchanged views on a number of regional and global issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in BRICS in the context of South Africa’s chairmanship this year.

President Ramaphosa briefed PM on the African Leaders’ Peace Initiative. Noting that India was supportive of all initiatives aimed at ensuring durable peace and stability in Ukraine, PM reiterated India’s consistent call for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward.

President Ramaphosa conveyed his full support to India’s initiatives as part of its ongoing G20 Presidency and that he looked forward to his visit to India.

The two leaders agreed to remain in touch.
