पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी यांनी एका पॉडकास्टच्या माध्यमातून आज अमेरिकी संगणक शास्त्रज्ञ लेक्स फ्रिडमन यांच्याशी विविध विषयांवर संवाद साधला. या मनमोकळ्या संभाषणादरम्यान जेव्हा पंतप्रधानांना विचारण्यात आले की ते उपवास का करतात आणि कशा पद्धतीने करतात तेव्हा मोदी यांनी पंतप्रधानांप्रती आदराचे प्रतीक म्हणून स्वतः उपवास धरण्याच्या लेक्स फ्रिडमन यांच्या कृतीबद्दल कृतज्ञता व्यक्त केली. “भारतात धार्मिक परंपरा दैनंदिन जीवनासोबत खोलवर रुजलेल्या आहेत ,” असे पंतप्रधान म्हणाले. भारताच्या सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाने सांगितलेल्या अर्थानुसार, हिंदुत्व हे केवळ धार्मिक रीतीभातीविषयीचे तत्व नसून जीवनाला मार्गदर्शन करणारे तत्वज्ञान आहे असे त्यांनी सांगितले. उपवास हे शिस्त अंगी बाणवण्यासाठीचे तसेच आंतरिक आणि बाह्य आत्म्याचा समतोल साधण्यासाठीचे साधन आहे यावर मोदी यांनी अधिक भर दिला. उपवास केल्यामुळे आपल्या जाणीवा अधिक संवेदनशील तसेच जागरूक होऊन अधिक प्रखर बनतात असे त्यांनी नमूद केले. उपवासाच्या काळात कोणाकोणाला सूक्ष्म सुगंध आणि तपशील अधिक स्पष्टपणे जाणवतात असे निरीक्षण त्यांनी नोंदवले. उपवासामुळे विचार प्रक्रियेला वेग येऊन नवीन दृष्टीकोन सापडत जातात आणि चौकटीबाहेरच्या विचारांना प्रोत्साहन मिळते असे देखील पंतप्रधानांनी अधोरेखित केले. उपवास म्हणजे केवळ अन्न वर्ज्य करणे नव्हे तर त्यामध्ये मनाची तसेच शरीराची तयारी आणि विषारी तत्वांचे निःसारण करण्याची शास्त्रीय प्रक्रिया समाविष्ट आहे असे त्यांनी स्पष्ट केले. कितीतरी दिवस आधीच ते आयुर्वेदिक आणि योग प्रक्रियांचे अनुसरण करून ते उपवासासाठी त्यांच्या शरीराला सज्ज करतात यावर अधिक भर देऊन पंतप्रधान मोदी यांनी या काळात पाणी पीत राहण्याचे महत्त्व अधोरेखित केले. ते म्हणाले की एकदा उपवास सुरु झाला की त्यानंतर ते त्याला भक्ती आणि स्वयंशिस्तीची कृती मानतात आणि त्या काळात सखोल आत्मचिंतन आणि लक्ष एकाग्र करण्यावर भर देतात. पंतप्रधान म्हणाले की त्यांच्या उपवासाचे मूळ वैयक्तिक अनुभवामध्ये असून त्यांच्या शालेय जीवनादरम्यान महात्मा गांधी यांच्या प्रेरणेतून सुरु झालेल्या चळवळीदरम्यान उपवास धरण्याची सुरुवात त्यांनी केली. त्यांच्या पहिल्याच उपवासादरम्यान त्यांना उर्जा आणि जागरुकता यामध्ये मोठी वाढ होत असल्याची अनुभूती आली आणि त्यातून उपवासाच्या परिवर्तनशील सामर्थ्याबद्दल त्यांची खात्री झाली असा अनुभव पंतप्रधानांनी सर्वांना सांगितला. उपवासामुळे त्यांच्या क्रिया मंद होत नाहीत तर उलट बहुतेकदा त्यांची उत्पादकता वाढते असे त्यांनी आवर्जून नमूद केले. ते म्हणाले की उपवासादरम्यान त्यांच्या विचारांचा ओघ अधिक मुक्तपणे आणि सर्जकतेसह वाहतो आणि त्यांच्यासाठी तो स्वतःला व्यक्त करण्याचा एक अतुलनीय अनुभव होऊन जातो.
