पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी यांनी उत्तर प्रदेशात मेरठ येथे मेजर ध्यानचंद क्रीडा विद्यापीठाची पायाभरणी केली.अंदाजे 700 कोटी रुपये खर्चून या क्रीडा विद्यापीठाची स्थापना करण्यात येईल आणि सिंथेटिक हॉकी मैदान, फुटबॉल मैदान, बास्केटबॉल/व्हॉलीबॉल/हँडबॉल/कबड्डी मैदान, लॉन टेनिस कोर्ट, जिम्नॅशियम हॉल, सिंथेटिक रनिंग स्टेडियम, जलतरण तलाव, बहुउद्देशीय सभागृह आणि सायकल शर्यतीसाठी असणारे रिंगण यासह आधुनिक आणि अत्याधुनिक क्रीडा पायाभूत सुविधांनी हे विद्यापीठ सुसज्ज असेल. विद्यापीठात नेमबाजी, स्क्वॉश, जिम्नॅस्टिक्स, भारोत्तोलन, तिरंदाजी, कॅनोईंग आणि कयाकिंग इत्यादी सुविधाही उपलब्ध असतील.या विद्यापीठात 540 महिला आणि 540 पुरुष खेळाडूंसह 1080 खेळाडूंना प्रशिक्षण देण्याची क्षमता असेल.
