Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, paid a State Visit to India on 25–27 January 2026 as the Chief Guests for the 77th Republic Day of India. President Costa and President von der Leyen were accompanied by a high-level delegation including High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Ms. Kaja Kallas and Trade Commissioner Mr. Maroš Šefčovič.

The visit of the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission to India led to a joint announcement on the conclusion of negotiations for the India–EU Free Trade Agreement. Several agreements and MoUs were signed in key areas, including Defence & Security, Skilling and Mobility, Disaster Management, Clean Energy, Science & Technology, Research & Innovation and connectivity.
