Villages in Gujarat will soon have all facilities available in a city, but will also retain the rural essence, said chief minister Narendra Modi at a panel discussion, part of the Vibrant Gujarat event, on Monday.

Agreeing with former president APJ Abdul Kalam’s concept of ‘Providing Urban Amenities in the Rural Areas’ (PURA), Shri Modi said the state government has plans to turn its villages into ‘Rurban’ areas.

Speaking at a panel discussion at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) and explaining his Rurban concept, Shri Modi said, “Urbanisation is a fact. While this fact could either be looked at as a problem or an opportunity since we can’t negate this fact, I would prefer the second option,” said Modi, adding, “Since we can’t stop urbanisation, we could tweak it a bit to convert it into an opportunity. My idea of Rurban area is a place with the soul of a village and the amenities of an urban area this way the villages will not disappear and the issues of the existing urban areas will also be solved.”

Shri Modi gave examples of schemes such as Jyotigram Yojana, where villages are provided uninterrupted power supply and other schemes like providing broadband connections in villages and so on. He said, “Migration from villages has reduced to 33 per cent because of Jyotigram Yojana. Due to broadband connections, children could get good education in their own villages and so parents have stopped migrating to the city for good education of their children.”

He further said, “Gujarat will not sit and wait, but will adopt the best from all the states and countries in the world.” The panel discussion was held in connection with Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011. The event saw the presence of additional chief secretary of planning of Gujarat Varun Maira, additional chief secretary of labour and employment of Gujarat Varesh Sinha and other dignitaries.
