Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi in his condolence message said: 'The nation has lost in the death of Shri Shekhawat a leader who had showed direction to the nation and dedicated his life in the service of the people'. He was an able administrator and popular leader who upheld the dignity and decorum of the high office of the Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Speaker, as well as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan thrice. Born in a farmer's family he had imbibed patriotism from the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh.

Gujarat's Governor Dr Shrimati Kamlaji, expressing her deep sorrow at the death of Vice-president Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, today described him as a front-ranked politician, able administrator and a dynamic leader.

In her condolence message, she said that Shri Shekhawat ably performed his duty as the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha and as the Chief Minister. He would be remembered as a simple man with great personality. His style of functioning was always directed towards the welfare of the society.

Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shri Ashok Bhatt said that the late Shri Shekhawat was liked by all for his capacity to take everybody along and was a fatherly figure to thousands of party workers. Shri Shekhawat had started his career as a worker with Bharatiya Janata Party since its inception and rose to be the Chief Minister of Rajasthan thrice and Vice-President. It was he who had for the first time introduced 'Antyodaya Yojna' in 1977.

Shri Bhatt said it was also his personal loss as he was closely associated with Shri Shekhawat for the last four decades.
