India’s youth does not merely want better cities, they want the best cities. We are facilitating the creation of world class urban centres which will enhance ‘EaseofLiving’ and contribute to the nation’s transformation. – PM Modi

According to Prime Minister Modi the future of mobility is based on 7Cs- Common, Connected, Convenient, Congestion-free, Charged, Clean & Cutting-edge.

A roof over one’s head is what every individual aspires for. A better home ensures a better life – a life of greater ease. Demand for affordable housing for the poor and middle class is on the rise. In order tofulfil this aspiration, provide affordable housing and to address the concerns of consumers who were exploited by builders, the government under the leadership of PM Modi took up manyreforms:

  • The government protected the interests of home buyers with the introduction of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act. This has many pro-consumer features such as a mandate upon builders to maintain separate escrow accounts for the project, rigorous consensus requirements to make changes in the project and actions against delays in delivery.
  • Providing affordable housing to middle classes and the poorest sections of society with the launch of the PM Awas Yojana is also a step in the right direction towards ensuring Housing for All by 2022. Over 1.5 crore houses have been constructed so far.

However, housing without sanitation will be incomplete. Open defecation was prevalent in many cities and rural areas. Not only did it undermine the dignity of women, but also had a severe impact on proper sanitation and public health.  With Swachh Bharat Mission, nearly 10 crore household toilets have been built in the past five years. Total sanitation coverage in India has increased to over 98.53% owing to the Swachh Bharat Mission, compared to the 38.7% coverage achieved until 2014.  This has improved the quality of life of women and ensured a life of dignity for them as well.

Transportation acts as arteries of an economy. Green means of transport reduce pollution and give easy access to livelihood opportunities along with decongesting urban spaces.536 kilometres Of Metro Rail Lines operational in 10 cities such as Delhi &NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai & Gurugram have brought about ease of living for the citizens in the city. This is attributed to the prolonged efforts of the Modi government. Further government programmes such as theSmart Cities Mission and AMRUT aim to address infrastructural concerns with emphasis on sustainability and green technology.

The government’s efforts have not been limited only to urban areas.

Rural roads, for example, have been built at almost double the pace compared to earlier times. In 2013-14, rural roads were being built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana at 69 km per day, while in 2017-18, it was being built at 134 km per day. Rural road connectivity had reached 91% by the end 2018, compared to 56% in 2014.

Importance has been given to remote areas in Northeast India as well. Many states in the Northeast have finally been brought onto the rail map of India, decades after independence, by the Modi government. Sikkim has finally been put on the aviation map of India. Connectivity in the Northeast has been improved through all-weather availability of convenient transport by building bridges such as theBogibeel bridge, India’s longest railroad bridge, which was completed after a delay of decades.

All these infrastructural initiatives and efforts of the government have borne fruit towards easing  lives of citizens across the country.
