Solar energy should be encouraged more.
Various ways of encouragement / usage can be
a)In cities, houses of societies using solar energy for street illumination can be given rebate in house tax.
b)In villages, govt can install solar panels to illuminate villages/interior roads.
c)Corporations can use solar panels for illuminating street lights. This will save lot of electricity and will be particularly useful during any drought like situation.
Swagat program should be expanded
Swagat program currently in districts other than Gandhinagar is managed by collectors. I had an experience of the same in Baroda. To incorporate more views and allow more discussion on the issues, I feel people's representatives i.e. MP, concerned MLA's and concerned Corporators (i.e.of the constituency) should be involved. They are accountable and will help in resolving the problems of the common man on the street.More advertisements should be given to this program. There is very little awareness.
Good points by Rajay. Few corrections from me. Point a and b should be approved.
As for point c : Solar panels are very costly. Government will not be able to afford this on such large scale (all street lights). Government should replace conventional Sodium lamps (250 W) with CFL lamps (25 W). It will save 90% energy(250 W --> 25 W) and bills too !

I agree with you. Solar Energy must be encouraged. Solar panels and other equipments should be made by government itself. So, that they can be available to the public at cheaper rates.

WE SHOULD PASS RULES THAT FOR EVERY NEW CONSTRUCTION THERE MUST BE MAXIMUM USE OF NATURAL LIGHT USED -DOORS AND WINDOWS MUST BE WELL PLANNED -OLD CONCEPT VENTILATATION

I read in today's newspaper that Gujarat Government is in process of designing policies for energy efficient buildings. The policy should include all parameters like lighting, heat resistance (to minimize AC use), Kitchens in south section (warm area) etc. Lighting is carried out only for 4-5 hours (6.30-10.30 on average). So, maximum extension of 1 hour is possible with energy efficient buildings (7.30-10.30). Ventilation and heat resistant structures should be given more weightage. They (AC, fans) are used 24 hours and are heavy electronics.

A nation like india should invest more resources and money in natural energy sources. Public/private partnership should be there for research and development for natural energy sources. Intial cost is expensive but if we should focus more on r & d then it will help in future. In canada, Ontario took decision that they are not going to install nuclear plant due to it's intial cost, so Gujarat should invest more time, money and resources to get energy from nature which is free after intial cost. In india govt. should encourage high efficiency and energy saving appliances, lighting fixtures, lamps, tublights, etc. We can study more about solar power from europe, because some counries have almost 85% to 95% energy from solar sources. Canada also has developed various kinds of natural sources to get energy i.e. heating and lighting for houses. Even improvements in design and construction of the house or industrial units or commercial units can save lots of energy.

THE ROOF OF HOUSES SHOULD BE PLANNED WITH SLOPES SO THAT WE CAN PUT SOLAR PANELS ON SLOPES WHICH WILL HELP US TO UTILISE SOLAR ENERGY. SOLAR PANELS ARE CONNECTED TO BATTERY WHICH CAN BE USED AT NIGHT FOR HOUSE LAMPS. IT IS ONLY A ONE TIME INVESTMENT.....
